BRIEFTheHazardCommunicationStandard(HCS)(29CFR1910.1200(g)),revisedin2012,requiresthatthechemicalmanufacturer,distributor,orimporterprovideSafetyDataSheets(SDSs)(formerlyMSDSsorMaterialSafetyDataSheets)foreachhazardouschemicaltodownstreamuserstocommunicateinformationonthesehazards.TheinformationcontainedintheSDSislargelythesameastheMSDS,exceptnowtheSDSsarerequiredtobepresentedinaconsistentuser-friendly,16-sectionformat.ThisbriefprovidesguidancetohelpworkerswhohandlehazardouschemicalstobecomefamiliarwiththeformatandunderstandthecontentsoftheSDSs.TheSDSincludesinformationsuchasthepropertiesofeachchemical;thephysical,health,andenvironmentalhealthhazards;protectivemeasures;andsafetyprecautionsforhandling,storing,andtransportingthechemical.TheinformationcontainedintheSDSmustbeinEnglish(althoughitmaybeinotherlanguagesaswell).Inaddition,OSHArequiresthatSDSpreparersprovidespecificminimuminformationasdetailedinAppendixDof29CFR1910.1200.TheSDSpreparersmayalsoincludeadditionalinformationinvarioussection(s).HazardCommunicationStandard:SafetyDataSheetsSections1through8containgeneralinformationaboutthechemical,identification,hazards,composition,safehandlingpractices,andemergencycontrolmeasures(e.g.,firefighting).Thisinformationshouldbehelpfultothosethatneedtogettheinformationquickly.Sections9through11and16containothertechnicalandscientificinformation,suchasphysicalandchemicalproperties,stabilityandreactivityinformation,toxicologicalinformation,exposurecontrolinformation,andotherinformationincludingthedateofpreparationorlastrevision.TheSDSmustalsostatethatnoapplicableinformationwasfoundwhenthepreparerdoesnotfindrelevantinformationforanyrequiredelement.TheSDSmustalsocontainSections12through15,tobeconsistentwiththeUNGloballyHarmonizedSystemofClassificationandLabelingofChemicals(GHS),butOSHAwillnotenforcethecontentofthesesectionsbecausetheyconcernmattershandledbyotheragencies.Adescriptionofall16sectionsoftheSDS,alongwiththeircontents,ispresentedbelow:Section1:IdentificationThissectionidentifiesthechemicalontheSDSaswellastherecommendeduses.Italsoprovidestheessentialcontactinformationofthesupplier.Therequiredinformationconsistsof:•Productidentifierusedonthelabelandanyothercommonnamesorsynonymsbywhichthesubstanceisknown.•Name,address,phonenumberofthemanufacturer,importer,orotherresponsibleparty,andemergencyphonenumber.•Recommendeduseofthechemical(e.g.,abriefdescriptionofwhatitactuallydoes,suchasflameretardant)andanyrestrictionsonuse(includingrecommendationsgivenbythesupplier).1Section2:Hazard(s)IdentificationThissectionidentifiesthehazardsofthechemicalpresentedontheSDSandtheappropriatewarninginformationassociatedwiththosehazards.Therequiredinformationconsistsof:•Thehazardclassificationofthechemical(e.g.,flammableliquid,category1).•Signalword.•Hazardstatement(s).•Pictograms(thepictogramsorhazardsymbolsmaybepresentedasgraphicalreproductionsofthesymbolsinblackandwhiteorbeadescriptionofthenameofthesymbol(e.g.,skullandcrossbones,flame).•Precautionarystatement(s).•Descriptionofanyhazardsnototherwiseclassified.•Foramixturethatcontainsaningredient(s)withunknowntoxicity,astatementdescribinghowmuch(percentage)ofthemixtureconsistsofingredient(s)withunknownacutetoxicity.Pleasenotethatthisisatotalpercentageofthemixtureandnottiedtotheindividualingredient(s).Section3:Composition/InformationonIng...
