EHS-RESPIRATORYPROTECTION-2013Rev.00Page1AppendixA29CFR1910.134RespiratoryProtectionRespiratoryProtectionStandardThissectionappliestoGeneralIndustry(part1910),Shipyards(part1915),MarineTerminals(part1917),Longshoring(part1918),andConstruction(part1926).1910.134(a)Permissiblepractice.1910.134(a)(1)Inthecontrolofthoseoccupationaldiseasescausedbybreathingaircontaminatedwithharmfuldusts,fogs,fumes,mists,gases,smokes,sprays,orvapors,theprimaryobjectiveshallbetopreventatmosphericcontamination.Thisshallbeaccomplishedasfarasfeasiblebyacceptedengineeringcontrolmeasures(forexample,enclosureorconfinementoftheoperation,generalandlocalventilation,andsubstitutionoflesstoxicmaterials).Wheneffectiveengineeringcontrolsarenotfeasible,orwhiletheyarebeinginstituted,appropriaterespiratorsshallbeusedpursuanttothissection.1910.134(a)(2)Respiratorsshallbeprovidedbytheemployerwhensuchequipmentisnecessarytoprotectthehealthoftheemployee.Theemployershallprovidetherespiratorswhichareapplicableandsuitableforthepurposeintended.Theemployershallberesponsiblefortheestablishmentandmaintenanceofarespiratoryprotectionprogramwhichshallincludetherequirementsoutlinedinparagraph(c)ofthissection.1910.134(b)Definitions.Thefollowingdefinitionsareimportanttermsusedintherespiratoryprotectionstandardinthissection.Air-purifyingrespiratormeansarespiratorwithanair-purifyingfilter,cartridge,orcanisterthatremovesspecificaircontaminantsbypassingambientairthroughtheair-purifyingelement.Assignedprotectionfactor(APF)meansthework-placelevelofrespiratoryprotectionthatarespiratororclassofrespiratorsisexpectedtoprovidetoem-ployeeswhentheemployerimplementsacontinu-ing,effectiverespiratoryprotectionprogramasspecifiedbythissection.Atmosphere-supplyingrespiratormeansarespiratorthatsuppliestherespiratoruserwithbreathingairfromasourceindependentoftheambientatmos-phere,andincludessupplied-airrespirators(SARs)andself-containedbreathingapparatus(SCBA)units.Canisterorcartridgemeansacontainerwithafilter,sorbent,orcatalyst,orcombinationoftheseitems,whichremovesspecificcontaminantsfromtheairpassedthroughthecontainer.Demandrespiratormeansanatmosphere-supplyingrespiratorthatadmitsbreathingairtothefacepieceonlywhenanegativepressureiscreatedinsidethefacepiecebyinhalation.Emergencysituationmeansanyoccurrencesuchas,butnotlimitedto,equipmentfailure,ruptureofcon-tainers,orfailureofcontrolequipmentthatmayordoesresultinanuncontrolledsignificantreleaseofanairbornecontaminant.Employeeexposuremeansexposuretoaconcentra-tionofanairbornecontaminantthatwouldoccuriftheemployeewerenotusingrespiratoryprotection.End-of-service-lifeindicator(ESLI)meansasystemthatwarnstherespiratoruseroftheapproachoftheendofadequaterespiratoryprotection,forexample,thatthesorbentisapproachingsaturationorisnolongereffective.Escape-onlyrespiratormeansarespiratorintendedtobeusedonlyforemergencyexit.Filterorairpurifyingelementmeansacomponentusedinrespiratorstoremovesolidorliquidaerosolsfromtheinspiredair.Filteringfacepiece(dustmask)meansanegativepressureparticulaterespiratorwithafilterasaninte-gralpartofthefacepieceorwiththeentirefacepiececomposedofthefilteringmedium.Fitfactormeansaquantitativeestimateofthefitofaparticularrespiratortoaspecificindividual,andtypi-callyestimatestheratiooftheconcentrationofasubstanceinambientairtoitsconcentrationinsidetherespiratorwhenworn.Fittestmeanstheu...
