Doc:CHEMLaboratoryWorkRiskAssessment_v4Custodian:ChemDocControlPage1of7Created:Aug2003LastReview:Sept.2008NextReview:Sept.2009LaboratoryWorkRiskAssessment1.IntroductionThelegislationgoverningHazardousSubstancesandDangerousGoodsrequiresthatalloperationsandexperimentsinvolvinghazardousmaterialsmusthavedocumentationshowinganassessmentoftherisksinvolvedandtheimplementationofcontrolstominimiseexposureorchanceofanemergency.Applyingtheriskmanagementapproachtosafetyinthelaboratorymeanscompletingariskassessmentofanyresearchprojectorexperimentbeforeworkbegins.Everytimeanewexperimentistobecarriedout,ariskassessmentmustbeperformedanddocumentedbytheresearcherinconsultationwiththesupervisor.Ariskassessmentshouldidentifypotentialhazardsanddeterminetheactionsorcontrolsrequiredtoeliminateorreduceanyriskstothehealthofworkers.Carryingoutariskassessmentforanexperimentrequiresthreesimplesteps:*IDENTIFYthehazardsandproblemsassociatedwiththesubstancesandtasks*ASSESStheriskofexposuretothehazard*CONTROLtheriskbyimplementationofproceduresandprecautions2.TheRiskAssessmentProtocolRiskassessmentinvolvesconsideringthefollowingstepswhenundertakingaresearchproject:•Determinethescopeoftheprojectorexperiment.Definethepurposeoftheproject,where,whenandhowwilltheworkbedone,andwhowilldothework.Ascertaintheleveloftheirknowledge,skillsandexpertise.•Identifythesubstancesandprocesses/techniquesIncludedisposalofwasteproducedinthisanalysis.•Determinethepotentialhazardsinvolved.Gatherinformationaboutthesubstancesusedandproduced,whethertheybesolid,liquid,gas,vapour,dust,mist,orfume.Determinelikelyhazardsbyreadingmaterialsafetydatasheets(MSDS),label,orothertechnicalreference.Arethereotherpossiblehazardsassociatedwiththeproject(electrical,radiation,ergonomicetc).•EvaluatethelevelofriskEvaluationisbasedonyourknowledgeofthehazardsinvolvedandwhatcangowrong.Assesstherisktohealthassociatedwithparticularjobsortasksusingahazardoussubstance.Thisinvolvesconsideringthe:-•natureofthepotentialhealthhazard•severityofthepotentialhealthhazard•degreeofexposure,including:-•routeofexposure(inhalation,absorption,ingestion,inoculation),•levelofexposure•adequacyofcontrolmeasuresinminimisingexposure•DeterminetheactionsandcontrolstobetakenThismayincludeprecautionssuchastheuseofspecialprotectiveequipment,useofafumecupboard,specifichandlingprocedures,presenceofacolleaguewhilstcarryingouttheprocedureoranyparticulardisposalmethodrequired.•MonitorandreviewLaboratoryWorkRiskAssessmentDoc:CHEMLaboratoryWorkRiskAssessment_v4Custodian:Chem.DocControlPage2of7Created:Aug2003LastReview:Sept.2008NextReview:Sept.2009Thewholeprocessshouldbemonitoredandreviewedtoensurethatinitialevaluationandcontrolswereeffective.Re-evaluationoftherisksandcontrolswillbenecessarywithchangesinsubstances,processesandprocedures.3.ResponsibilitiesInaresearchlaboratory,theSchoolofChemistryLaboratoryWorkRiskAssessmentshouldbecompletedbytheresearchworkerforeachnewexperimentundertaken.Completionoftheriskassessmentformplaysanintegralroleinthepreparationanddesignofanexperiment.Theresearchworkershoulddiscusstheassessmentwithasupervisororhis/hernominatedseniorresearcher.Thelaboratoryworkermustclearlyprinttheirnameandthesupervisorisrequiredtosigntheriskassessmentform.Supervisorscanbemadeindividuallyliableforbreachesofthisrequirementunderthelegislation.Seniorresearchandacade...
