503OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdmin.,Labor§1910.157PreventionandControlAdministra-tion,U.S.DepartmentofCommerce(nowknownastheU.S.FireAdminis-tration),whicharecontainedin‘‘ModelPerformanceCriteriaforStructuralFirefighters’Helmets’’(August1977)whichisincorporatedbyreferenceasspecifiedin§1910.6,(SeeappendixDtosubpartL).(ii)Protectiveeyeandfacedeviceswhichcomplywith§1910.133shallbeusedbyfirebrigadememberswhenper-formingoperationswherethehazardsofflyingorfallingmaterialswhichmaycauseeyeandfaceinjuriesarepresent.Protectiveeyeandfacede-vicesprovidedasaccessoriestoprotec-tiveheaddevices(faceshields)areper-mittedwhensuchdevicesmeetthere-quirementsof§1910.133.(iii)Fullfacepieces,helmets,orhoodsofbreathingapparatuswhichmeettherequirementsof§1910.134andparagraph(f)ofthissection,shallbeacceptableasmeetingtheeyeandfaceprotectionrequirementsofparagraph(e)(5)(ii)ofthissection.(f)Respiratoryprotectiondevices—(1)Generalrequirements.(i)Theemployermustensurethatrespiratorsarepro-videdto,andusedby,eachfirebrigademember,andthattherespiratorsmeettherequirementsof29CFR1910.134foreachemployeerequiredbythissectiontousearespirator.(ii)Approvedself-containedbreath-ingapparatuswithfull-facepiece,orwithapprovedhelmetorhoodconfigu-ration,shallbeprovidedtoandwornbyfirebrigadememberswhileworkinginsidebuildingsorconfinedspaceswheretoxicproductsofcombustionoranoxygendeficiencymaybepresent.Suchapparatusshallalsobeworndur-ingemergencysituationsinvolvingtoxicsubstances.(iii)Approvedself-containedbreath-ingapparatusmaybeequippedwithei-thera‘‘buddy-breathing’’deviceoraquickdisconnectvalve,evenifthesedevicesarenotcertifiedbyNIOSH.Iftheseaccessoriesareused,theyshallnotcausedamagetotheapparatus,orrestricttheairflowoftheapparatus,orobstructthenormaloperationoftheapparatus.(iv)Approvedself-containedcom-pressedairbreathingapparatusmaybeusedwithapprovedcylindersfromotherapprovedself-containedcom-pressedairbreathingapparatuspro-videdthatsuchcylindersareofthesamecapacityandpressurerating.Allcompressedaircylindersusedwithself-containedbreathingapparatusshallmeetDOTandNIOSHcriteria.(v)Self-containedbreathingapparatusesmusthaveaminimumservice-liferatingof30minutesinac-cordancewiththemethodsandre-quirementsspecifiedbyNIOSHunder42CFRpart84,exceptforescapeself-containedbreathingapparatus(ESCBAs)usedonlyforemergencyes-capepurposes.(vi)Self-containedbreathingappa-ratusshallbeprovidedwithanindi-catorwhichautomaticallysoundsanaudiblealarmwhentheremainingservicelifeoftheapparatusisreducedtowithinarangeof20to25percentofitsratedservicetime.(2)Positive-pressurebreathingappa-ratus.(i)Theemployershallassurethatself-containedbreathingappa-ratusorderedorpurchasedafterJuly1,1981,forusebyfirebrigademembersperforminginteriorstructuralfirefightingoperations,areofthepres-sure-demandorotherpositive-pressuretype.EffectiveJuly1,1983,onlypres-sure-demandorotherpositive-pressureself-containedbreathingapparatusshallbewornbyfirebrigademembersperforminginteriorstructuralfirefighting.(ii)Thisparagraphdoesnotprohibittheuseofaself-containedbreathingapparatuswheretheapparatuscanbeswitchedfromademandtoapositive-pressuremode.However,suchappa-ratusshallbeinthepositive-pressuremodewhenfirebrigademembersareperforminginteriorstructuralfirefightingoperations.[45FR60706,Sept.12,1980;46FR24557,May1,1981;49FR18295,Apr.30,1984;61FR9239,Mar.7,1996;6...
