RoadAccidentAnalysis:ACaseStudyofFederalRouteFT024YongPeng-ParitSulongMohdIdrusMohdMasirin1,WalidA.Al-Bargi1,aandJoewonoPrasetijo1andBasilDavidDaniel11FacultyofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineering,UniversityTunHusseinOnnMalaysia,86400BatuPahat,Johor,MalaysiaAbstract.Trafficaccidentsareconsideredasanunplannedandunfortunateeventwhichisaseriousconcerntothecommunityaswellastheauthority.Anaccident-countermeasurecanreducetherateofroadaccidentsbyinitiallyidentifyingcriticallocations.ThetotalofroadaccidentsalongFT024between2009and2012is907cases.Roadaccidentsduringthesameperiodrangebetween24%and26%eachyear.Theseaccidentskilled34peopleandinjuringanother101people.Thisresearchaimstoidentifyfactorsthatmaycontributetothecauseofaccidentsandtostudytheeffectsofspeed,volumeandroadgeometryonroadaccidents.Inthisstudy,thelocationslabelledaskm1,km2,km4,km8,km5andkm14ofFederalRouteFT024YongPeng–ParitSulongwereselectedasthestudy-casesectionsbasedonAccidentPointWeightageofranking,inwhicheachlocationhasdifferentroadcharacteristics.Speedstudywascarriedoutatselectedroadsectionstoevaluatetheinfluenceofspeeduponroadaccidents;andtrafficvolumecountwasconductedatthesameselectedroadsectionstodeterminetheexistingconditionoftheroute.Besides,roadgeometryobservationsandmeasurementswerealsoconductedatselectedsections,theywerealsostudiedtoevaluateinfluenceofroaddesignsuponroadaccidents.TheextracteddatawereanalyzedbyusingregressionanalysisondifferentvariablestoevaluatetherelationshipbetweenaccidentWeightagepointandotherdependentvariablesthatwereconsideredtohaveconsiderableeffectsuponroadaccidentssuchasmeanspeed,volume,shoulderwidth,lanewidthandaccesspoint.Pvaluebelow0.05wasconsideredasstatisticallysignificant.Afterconductingdataanalysis,thisstudyshowedthatthenumberofroadaccidentsincreaseswiththeincrementofspeedandaccesspoint.Ontheotherhand,volumehasnostrongrelationshiptoroadaccidentswhichmeansthatitmaynothaveaneffectonaccidents.Moreover,basedontheassumptionsmadebytheresearchersandprojectsupervisors,roadsafetyindexdevelopmentisimportantfortheselectedroadsectionsalongFT024toimprovetheroadconditionsintermsofsafetyandalsotoproposeimprovementsattheselectedlocationsinordertoreduceaccidentrate.1IntroductionRoadtrafficaccidentisdefinedas“Anaccidentthatasaccidentwhichtookplaceontheroadbetweentwoormoreobjects;resultedinoneormorepersonsbeingdiedorinjured,andatleastonemovingvehiclewasinvolved[1,2].Thus,RTAiscollisionsbetweenroadvehicles;betweenautomobilesandpedestrians;betweenroadvehiclesandanimals;orbetweenroadvehiclesandgeographicaloraCorrespondingauthor:walidalbargi@gmail.comDOI:10.1051/C⃝Ownedbytheauthors,publishedbyEDPSciences,201/00(201)201confWebofConferencesMATECatecm,006664477040433���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������4MATECWebofConferencesarchitecturalobstacles.Roadtrafficaccidents(RTAs)haveturnedouttobeahugeworldwidepublichealthproblemkillingnearly1.2mpeopleyearlyandinjuringabout4timesthisnumber...
