JobSafetyAnalysis-GuidelineVersion3.2JobSafetyAnalysis(JSA)–GuidelineAjobsafetyanalysis(JSA)isaprocedurewhichhelpsintegrateacceptedsafetyandhealthprinciplesandpracticesintoaparticulartaskorjoboperation.InaJSA,potentialhazardsareidentifiedforeachstepofthetaskandcontrolsrecommendedforthesafestwaytodothejob.AJSAriskassessmentmustbedevelopedwhen:•theworkactivityinvolvesanumberofdifferenttasksandhazardsforwhichriskcontrolsneedtobeplanned,communicatedandimplemented•changesattheworkplaceoccurthatmayimpactontheeffectivenessofcontrolmeasures•aPermittoWorkisrequired•developingSOPsATake5riskassessmentcanbeusedinsteadofaJSAwhentheworkactivityinvolvesasimpletaskwithalimitednumberoflowriskhazardsandthereisgoodunderstandingabouthowthehazardsshouldbecontrolledtoensurethetaskiscompletedsafely.Forexampledoingavisualinspectionofaworksite,orclosingoffavalve,orinvestigatingatrippedswitch.DevelopingaJSAThepersonleadingtheworkisresponsiblefordevelopingtheJSA.Thisistypicallythe:•Persondoingtheworkforsinglepersontasks•Personsupervisingtheworkforteamtasks•Personinchargeofdesigningnewworkorequipment.OnemethodofdoingaJSAistohaveagroupofexperiencedworkerscompletetheanalysisthroughdiscussion.Anadvantageofthismethodisthatmorepeopleareinvolvedinawiderbaseofexperienceandpromotingamorereadyacceptanceoftheresultingworkprocedure.Thismethodismostsuitableforinfrequentlyperformedornewjobs;orsituationswhereobservationmaynotbepractical.WhenleadingJSAdiscussionsask:1.Whatarewedoing?2.Whatcouldgowrong?3.Whatdoweneedtodotomakeitsafe?ThesethreepromptquestionswillprovideyouwiththebasicinformationneededtobuildyourJSA.OnceyouhaveyourJSAframeworkbuilt,useavailableguidancetoensuretheriskcontrolmeasuredselectedaresufficienttoreducetherisksofarasreasonablypracticablei.e.standards,bestpracticeguidelines,WSLKeyRequirementsandrisksassessments.Includediagramsandphotoswhereneeded.BenefitsofdoingaJSATheJSAprocesshelpsidentifyhazardsandincreasethejobknowledgeofthoseparticipating.Safetyandhealthawarenessisraised,communicationbetweenworkersandsupervisorsisimproved,andacceptanceofsafeworkproceduresispromoted.JobSafetyAnalysis-GuidelineVersion3.2InstructionsJSAProcessTherearesevenbasicstepstofollow:Step1:Selectjobtobeanalysed.Whenwritingthedescriptionoftheworks,clearlydefinetheactivitiesforwhichtheJSAapplies.Complexjobs,orjobsthatlastseveralweeks,it’softenmoreeffectivetobreakthejobanalysisintospecificworkpackseachwithanindividualJSA.Whenselectingajobtobeanalysed,considerthefollowing:•Thescopeofthework.•Whenandwhereisthejobperformed?•Whohastodoitandhowoften?•Theactivitiesinvolvedandhowaretheydone?•Whatequipmentorproceduresareneededtoperformthejobsafely?Step2:Recordthestepsinthetask.Examineaspecificjobbybreakingitdownintoaseriesofstepsortasks.ThiswillenableyoutodiscoverpotentialhazardsyouandtheWorkTeammayencounter.Eachjoboroperationwillconsistofasetofstepsortasks.Besuretolistallthestepsneededtoperformthejob.Somestepsmaynotbeperformedeachtime,i.e.settinguptheworkarea,however,ifthatstepisgenerallypartofthejob,itshouldbelisted.Example:Step3:Identifythehazardsandassesstherisks.Ahazardisapotentialdanger.ThepurposeoftheJobSafetyAnalysisistoidentifyALLhazards,boththoseproducedbytheenvironmentorconditionsandthoseconnectedwiththeworkactivities.Compilinganaccurateandcompletelistofpotentialhazardswillallowyoutodeveloptherecommende...
