CONTRACTORKILLEDINFALLFROMROOFWORKINGATHEIGHTWorkatheightisworkinanyplaceat,aboveorbelow,groundlevel,whereapersoncouldbeinjured,iftheyfellfromthatplace.Accessandegresstoaplaceofwork,canalsobeworkingatheight.Examplesofworkingatheightare:-,•Workingonaroof•Workingfromaladder•Workatgroundleveladjacenttoanopenexcavation•Workanywherewherethereisariskoffalling•Erectingandworkingfromscaffolding•Worknearoradjacenttofragilesurfacese.g.skylightsWHYMANAGEWORKATHEIGHT•WorkatHeightRegulations2005•45workersacrossindustrydiedin2007asaresultoffallsfromheightand3,750sufferedinjury•Biggestcauseofworkplacedeath•Oneofthebiggestcausesofmajorinjuries,2/3rdsofmajorinjuries,causedby“lowfalls”AbriefingtoolformanagersLUCKYESCAPEAtrapdoorwascutinalandingtogiveaccesstothetopoftankerswithouthavingtoclimbthetankladder.Thepossibilityofsomeonefallingthroughthehole,(seephoto),wasnotconsideredsonohandrailingwasplacedaroundthetrapdoor.Asaresultanemployeewasluckytoescapewithabrokenshoulderwhenhenearlyfellthroughtheopeningafterthetrapdoorwasleftopen.Asubcontractorworkingonanewsilofellfromatemporaryworkingplatformwhilstaligningplates.Theplatformwasdesignedconsideringthefactthattheworkbeingundertakenrequiredfrequentmodificationoftheplatformtoallowinsertionofsiloplates.Theplatformincludedatophandrailwitha100mmlugfittingdownintosupporttubesandarestrainingstrapfittedasanintermediatehandrail.Thetophandrailbecamedislodgedfromitsfixingsatoneendandthecontractorfellbackwardsovertheintermediatestrapfalling1.1metrestotheground.Theresultingfallcausedthecontractortofracturehiscollarbone.(SA04/2008)CONTRACTORKILLEDIN27mFALLAncontractorfell27metrestohisdeathwhileworkingonamajorprojectatacompanycementplantoverseasduringaplannedmaintenanceshutdownperiod.Severalcontractorswereworkingontheconstructionofanewbagfilterstructureandtheirworkinvolvedthembeingon3differentplatformlevelstocarryoutthevarioustasksthatwereneeded.Afternoticingsomeofthesteelfloorgridsonthe3rd(highestplatformlevel)wereinsecureinonearea,thedeceasedaskedanothercontractortoweldthefloorinplacewhileheproceededtocheckthesecurityofthefloorgridswithhisfootinotherareas.Tragically,whilehewasdoingthis,asectionoffloorgridflippedoverandthecontractorfellthroughtheholethemissinggridhadcreatedandstraightthroughtheothertwoplatformlevelstothegroundthroughholesthathadbeenleftopenfollowingtheremovalofsomeoldducting.Anoverseascontractordiedafterfalling4metresfromabuildingroofatanaggregatesquarry.Thecontractorwasremovingcorrugatedsheetsfromthebuilding.Atthetimeoftheincidenthewastryingtoaccessaladder,whichwassecuredagainstasteelgirder,toclimbdownforhislunch.Asheattemptedtodothis,heslidonanunfixedcorrugatedsheetandfelltothegroundbelow.Sadly,hedied3dayslaterfromhisinjuries.FALLRESULTSINFRACTUREfromrelativelylowheightWorkingatHeightPreparationThisstopandthinktalkcanbeusedindividuallyorwithagroupofpeople.ItcouldbedeliveredintheworkplacewhereexamplesofWorkingatHeightcanbeobservedorwhereequipmentusedinWorkingatHeightisstored.Ifyouarecarryingoutapracticaldemonstration,takecarethattheareaissuitableforpeopletohearandseewhatyouaredoing.ParticipantsshouldreceiveacopyofthetalkfortheirCPDfilesaswellassigningthetrainingdeclaration.Introduction(Afterreadingoutthecasestudies)Workatheightcananddoestaketheformofmanyactivities,evenwhenworkingonpurposemadeplatformsorinbuildingsthereisthep...
